Graduate Program in Health, Environment and Biodiversity
Presentation
The Graduate Program in Health, Environment, and Biodiversity (PPG-SAB) at the Federal University of Southern Bahia (UFSB) has been designed based on the need for high-level human resources training, with a solid interdisciplinary foundation in Health and Biological Sciences, focusing on the expanded concept of health, bioprospecting, environmental changes, and their relationship with human and animal health. The program has two research lines described below.
Research Lines:
1. Biodiversity and Society
Understanding the biodiversity of organisms and their relationship with the health of humans and other animals is crucial for understanding health-disease processes. This research line aims to study and prospect bioactive compounds from species of the Atlantic Forest in Southern Bahia and analyze these compounds for their potential application in improving human and animal health. It also seeks to contribute to scientific and technological development through the valorization of natural resources, the cultivation and improvement of local biodiversity species by identifying the phytotherapeutic, phytochemical, and pharmacological potential of regional plants with potential applications for health. Furthermore, it involves conducting studies to correlate biodiversity with health, as this understanding is essential for comprehending the health-disease process in humans and other animals.
2. Health and Environment
Health and health-disease processes are influenced by the relationships between humans, animals, and the environment. This research line aims to study the impact of environmental, economic, and sociocultural factors on human health. To achieve this, it will be necessary to characterize the geographic distribution of diseases related to environmental changes and study vectors, parasites, and other biological organisms that are connected to human and animal health. Additionally, studies may be developed on vectors, parasites, and other biological organisms related to human and animal health, and measures for environmental education and health may be implemented.
Professional Title:
Master in Health, Environment, and Biodiversity
Field of Knowledge:
Interdisciplinary: Health and Biological Sciences
Graduate Profile
Graduate students from the program will have a degree in Health, Environment and Biodiversity, with the ability to work critically and responsibly in research, teaching and business in the areas of knowledge in which the program is inserted.
Area of Activity
The objective of the course is to train a professional who can work in research, teaching, or business, with skills in managing various issues at the interface of health, environment, and biodiversity, from an interdisciplinary and multiprofessional perspective.
Modality, Duration and Academic Shift
Modality:
Academic Master's Degree
Duration:
Minimum: 12 months
Maximum: 24 months
Academic Shift:
Activities will take place in all three shifts: morning, afternoon, and evening.
Infrastructure
This program is linked to the Health Sciences Training Center at the Paulo Freire Campus (CPF). This campus has infrastructure that includes laboratories for teaching and research areas. Experimental/laboratory-based research can make use of the CPF laboratories and other campuses, when necessary. The CPF has two laboratories, one of which is dedicated to molecular biology, although not limited to this field, while the other laboratory provides support materials for teaching activities.
Additionally, UFSB has a cooperation agreement with CEPLAC (Itabuna/BA), which includes a Biotechnology laboratory managed by UFSB professors who are members of the PPGSAB.
